Blogger Perspective: In the past, Wash U has been described as clutch, consistent, and classy. They are clutch because the Bears find a way to win when their backs are against the wall more often than not. There hasn’t been a team more consistent over the last decade, as the Bears have made the Final Four in seven of the last nine years including a national title in 2008, not to mention ten consecutive NCAA quarterfinal appearances. And classy speaks for itself. The Bears can get loud and intense at times just like any other team, but they are known to be good sportsmen and this comes from their coach, Roger Follmer, who has been the cornerstone of this program since he took over.
Located in the heart of the Midwest, Wash U has had success recruiting nationwide, and in particular they have capitalized on the Midwest and the Atlanta market. As compared to some other top ranked teams, there is less of an emphasis on tennis and more of a focus on academics at this top ranked research university. Of all the elite teams in the country, the Bears may spend the least amount of time on the court. They are known for intense 90 minute practices that often occur in the early mornings. But under Follmer’s direction, Wash U has managed to produce two NCAA singles champions in the past seven years as well as six consecutive finishes in the top five in the country. The Bears attract excellent recruits that are also excellent students and the school ranks near the top in the country in many different areas, from business to engineering to pre-med. Wash U’s tennis program is truly outstanding even without the presence of indoor courts directly on campus.
