D3ASW

Jessica “Cesar Millan” Fatemi

Player: Jessica Fatemi

Team: Emory

Results: 1-0 at #4 singles, 3-0 at #2 doubles in Emory’s run to their 7th consecutive UAA championship

Recap: Aside from a perfect doubles performance on the weekend with Daniela Lopez, Fatemi clinched the UAA title for her time in their 5-4 win over Chicago in the finals. With the match tied at 4-4, the freshman showed that she’s here to be clutch in the big moments and pulled out her match 6-4 in the third.

What’s next: NCAA regionals

Honorable Mention: Jannabelle Wu (CMU, was up 7-5, 4-0 on Fatemi when the match was called), Ella Shields and Maggie Dabadie (Millsaps, won their #2 doubles match against SAA Champions Sewanee)

Best experience with an animal: I was in college and just lost a REALLY bad match and was just kind of sitting by myself away from the rest of the matches moping (y’all know how it is, don’t judge me) when a random #dogofd3 comes up to me and sat in my lap and basically told me it was ok with his eyes. There were no other humans around so I’m not sure if this dog was real or my spirit animal. This dog looked into my soul. It was beautiful.

Worst experience with an animal: A few years ago, my newly adopted 3 month old rescue kitten was really underweight and had bad diarrhea/vomiting. Turns out he had a parasite and thanks to modern medicine he got better, but one night I stayed up all night with him trying to keep him hydrated while he was having diarrhea/vomiting everywhere and becoming veeerry lethargic. He was also crying and would only stop when I cuddled him. He got better and is now 18 lbs so there’s a happy ending but it was very traumatizing for me as a new cat mom and there was literally poop everywhere.

Fleming “Steve Irwin” Landau

Player: Fleming Landau

Team: Bowdoin

Results: 2-0 at #6 singles and #3 doubles with Sarah Shadowens in Bowdoin’s last weekend of the regular season

Recap: In stunning fashion, Landau dropped only a single game all weekend in her singles matches against Williams and Bates. Paired with Polar Bear senior, Shadowens, the two fought to claim tight victories over the Ephs and the Bobcats to go undefeated on the weekend as well. Fleming has been impressing all season, and she even recently picked up Bowdoin’s sole singles win at Midd when she triumphed over Emily Bian.

What’s next: NESCACs! Bowdoin should have a Pool C slot locked up, but, hey, anything could happen!

Honorable Mention: Risa Fukushige (Skidmore), Katy Hughes (Midd), Leah Bush (Williams)

Best experience with an animal: When I first got my dog and he wouldn’t leave my side for the first three weeks we brought him home. Allllll the puppy snuggles *swoon*

Worst experience with an animal: It took me 5 months to realize my whole tank of fish had died. My parents had gotten rid of the tank months before I even thought to ask where my fish had gone.

Lauren “Sarah McLachlan from the ASPCA commercial” Park

Player: Lauren Park

Team: University of Chicago

Results: 3-0 at #3 singles and 3-0 at #3 doubles with Nicole Semenov in this past weekend’s UAA Championship.

Recap: In an incredible run that ended in a 4-5 loss to Emory in the UAA Finals, freshman Lauren Park went 6-0 in doubles and singles matches against WashU, Brandeis, and Emory.  Against WashU and Brandeis, the Maroons picked up quick 5-0 wins in which Park got a 6-0, 6-0 win against Hodge from WashU and a 6-0, 6-2 win against Khromchenko of Brandeis.  Against Emory, Park/Semenov got the lone doubles point at #3 with a tough 8-6 win over Taylor/Watson. Then Park took a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Olcay to get Chicago on the brink at  4-4.

What’s next: Wait and see!  As I’ve tweeted I think Chicago gets the nod over CMU for a Pool C spot but we shall see what the committee says about that!

Honorable Mention: Annie Reiner (Kenyon; clinched the NCAC Championships at #6 singles)

Best experience with an animal: Adopting my dog from the shelter 10 years ago and seeing her blossom from an insecure and unpredictable dog to a loving and much more confident dog.

Worst experience with an animal: Same dog as above. Similar to D3ASW my poor dog got the worst diarrhea a few months ago. Poop all over the house and the only way to keep her from whining was to hold her. I stayed up with her all night until the vet was open. So stressful. But there was no better feeling than when she started to get better and get her energy and appetite back.

Kana “David Attenborough’s voice” Moriyama

Player: Kana Moriyama

Team: Caltech

Results: Winning the Ojai in singles, runner up with partner Anna Tifrea in doubles

Recap: Moriyama came into the week as the #3 seed, and scorched her way through the Ojai singles field. Most importantly, she defended California from the Texan invasion with wins against Southwestern’s Quetzeri and Trinity’s Mary Kaffen and Caroline Kutach. Her 6-4, 6-2 win over Kutach in the final is big for Individuals consideration, though she may need another big one in SCIACs too

What’s next: The Beavers look to make some noise at SCIACs this weekend, and will play a win-or-go-home match against Pomona-Pitzer this Friday

Honorable Mention: Riley Clayeux (Linfield), Andrea Gu (Whitman)

Best experience with an animal: My friend let me play with her puppy, who’s a golden/spaniel mix, and he got so excited that he jumped towards me and barrel rolled over on his back in mid-air to get ready for belly rubs. I plan on stealing him

Worst experience with an animal: When I was in middle school we had an “Outdoor Education” week where we’d spend a week in the wilderness together. One year we stayed in a cabin and when we got back from our hike I thought someone put a fake spider on my bed. Turns out that tarantula was real and 10-year-old me freaked out

Judy “Honeybadger don’t care” Kam

Player: Judy Kam

Team: NYU

Results: At UAAs Kam went 1-2 at #2 in doubles and 2-0 at #2 singles

Recap: The NYU vs. Wash U match for 5th place at UAAs was crazy. It was tied 4-4 and came down to Judy Kam vs. Laurel Wagner at #5 singles. That match reached a third set tiebreak and Kam pulled out the win 10-8 in the tiebreak. That’s a huge win for Kam and although Wash U hasn’t been the most consistent this season, it’s a big win for her team to take down higher-ranked Wash U at UAAs.

What’s next: Nothing, UAAs is the end of NYU’s season

Honorable Mention: Risa Fukushige from Skidmore, she beat Heather Boehm of Middlebury (which is Boehm’s second singles loss since 2017, the other was to Eudice). Also Libby Rickeman or Megan Guenther from MIT, who both pulled out third set wins in MIT’s comeback victory over Tufts.

Best experience with an animal: My friend in middle school had a labradoodle and that was my favorite dog ever.

Worst experience with an animal: Well when my family got our dog when I was in elementary school he bit me on the first night and our relationship didn’t really improve from there.

Congrats to the players of the week! Look out for more awesome content coming your way soon.

  1. D3 lurker

Landau didn’t play 6 singles against Williams, who seemed only to have played 5 in singles despite fielding 6 in doubles.

Great catch! Landau has definitely impressed, regardless. The big question mark is still around that 6th Williams player for me, though…They also only played 5 versus Bates the following day.
