UAA Finals Preview: No. 2 Emory vs. No. 4 Brandeis

AS Intro: COMING IN HERE HOT TO GIVE YOU AN CELEB SHOT INTRO AS I WRITE POOL C. I’M THE BEST THERE EVER WAS OR EVER WILL BE. With the craziness that happened in the UAA today, we would be remiss to not give you a huge Brandeis/Emory preview (we should be doing 3rd Place too but we’ve seen those two teams play more often than Nadal/Federer at this point). Brandeis shocked the world by beating the team from the Windy City, but it’s okay for Chicago cuz it’s not May just yet. I believe that this is Brandeis’s first ever UAA Final, but I could be wrong.

Brandeis being in this final match means a lot of things, but it also means that we have a REGIONAL WRITER in the UAA FINALS, which is quite exciting. Welcome to NewRegional, you’re in the big leagues now. Let’s keep it forward looking. Can Brandeis continue the Cinderella story of the year? Or will they be decimated by the Goliath of Goliaths, the Emory Eagles?

NewRegional: I’M HERE AND I’M HAPPY TO BE HERE. Just like Brian Windhorst with LeBron, I’ve ridden Deis’ coattails to the national spotlight and I couldn’t be happier about it. I’ve loved the season Brandeis is putting together and it AIN’T OVER YET GIVE ME MORE CAPS!! The Blog team has been humming as well, and if you’ve enjoyed our UAA and other content, hit that donation button on our homepage, we want to keep improving the site and keep growing!! Can the Judges keep making the magic happen?? Let’s find out.

Emory X-Factor:

AS: There is no Emory X Factor. Emory does not need an X Factor at this point. This team is the favorite and they will come out tomorrow guns blazing, looking for another UAA title. Brandeis is going to get Emory’s best shot, and we’ll see if they can survive another haymaker from a top team. It will be interesting.

Brandeis X-Factor: Deis needs a doubles lead. They’ve been getting great production out of their singles guys, but it’s the UAA finals. Emory is gunning for another tite, and the Eagles have shown they can close. Ng and Teigtmeier came up with a fantastic win today that nobody outside the Deis locker room saw coming. Brandeis is going to need a career day from someone tomorrow.

Match-by-Match

#1 Doubles: Bouchet/Jemison (EU) vs. Aizenberg/Coramutla (Brandeis)

NewRegional: This is gonna be a good one. Brandeis could really use this point from its top duo, but the pair lost 8-4 today in a match that wasn’t really that close. Bouchet and Jemison have quite the track record – did you know that Jemison is an All-American?? And has been named All-American multiple times?? EU, 8-5

AS: If Brandeis wants to win this match, they will need a doubles lead. Bouchet/Jemison have been pretty damn good this past year despite it being their first year together and I think it will be too much for the young duo from Deis. Let’s put a momentum alert out there with Brandeis if they are riding the wave of beating Chicago today, though. Anything can happen. EU 8-3

#2 Doubles: Spaulding/Wanner (EU) vs. Tzeng/Chen (Brandeis)

NewRegional: Spaulding and Wanner lost a tough one in a breaker today. Chen was out with cramps but Tzeng carried Rajan Vohra to a win. Gimmie Deis. Brandeis, 8-6

AS: Give us DEIS! Give us DEIS! But seriously, do you guys know how hard it is for a lower ranked team to pull two upsets in a row? Very hard. I think Emory is going to go up in doubles and I think that Cassone/Mora are going to win down at #3. This means I need Deis to win this match to keep it close, but I am ASouth, and with the Eagles I will die. Emory, 8-5

#3 Doubles: Cassone/Mora (EU) vs. Ng/Tegtmeier (Brandeis)

NewRegional: I’ve been a little tough on Ng and Tegtmeier this year as they really haven’t had any good wins. They just beat Raclin/Yuan, but Cassone and Mora pack a punch at #3. Emory, 8-4

AS: Cassone and Mora have been the truth down here. That being said, Deis won at #3 doubles today against supposedly one of the best teams in the nation in Raclin/Yuan. Interesting how things work out like that. This Emory team will be too strong down here. Emory completes the sweep and moves closer to UAA title #100. Emory 8-6.

#1 Singles: Jonathan Jemison (EU) vs. David Aizenberg (Brandeis)

NewRegional: Jonathan Jemison has been named All-American multiple times, did I mention that? Aiz has now clinched matches this year against Jed Kronenberg and Erik Kerrigan. RIDE THE HOT HAND. Brandeis, 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-3

#2 Singles: Hayden Cassone (EU) vs. Anupreeth Coramutla (Brandeis)

NewRegional: Preeth has been incredible for Brandeis of late, and while he’s shown he has what it takes to beat the best players in the country, Cassone is really freaking good, and dropped the hammer of Neves today. Emory, 7-5, 6-2

#3 Singles: Adrian Bouchet (EU) vs. Adam Tzeng (Brandeis)

NewRegional: In Case you haven’t realized it by now, I love Adam Tzeng. Brandeis, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5

#4 Singles: Antonio Mora (EU) vs. Jeff Chen (Brandeis)

NewRegional: Mora’s season has been good, but it doesn’t scream unbeatable to me. Chen has won big matches when it counts. Hopefully the day of rest and treatment does him well. Brandeis, 6-4, 7-6(5)

#5 Singles: Andrew Esses (EU) vs. Nikhil Das (Brandeis)

NewRegional: Das has been up and down, but was at 3-4 in the 3rd against Xu today. Esses was 4-4 in the 3rd with Kozlowski today and has been steady all year, but I’M FEELIN IT. Brandeis, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

#6 Singles: James Spaulding (EU) vs. Rajan Vohra (Brandeis)

NewRegional: Spaulding won 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 today. LOL. Good rebound from the senior. Emory, 6-2, 6-4

AS Thoughts: I’m not going to preview every singles match because I spent too much time writing the Pool C article, so I will give my general thoughts on singles here. Emory should be favored at most positions. But, we saw today that Brandeis is special in its own way. Guys you’ve never heard of are beating players you’ve heard of multiple times in the past week. It’s quite crazy. The magic can happen, but again, teams don’t just come in here and pull upsets twice in a row against Chicago and Emory. It’s just way too tough. And unfortunately, I have to pick the Eagles to make this quick, with a 5-0 win in the UAA Finals. I am sorry to all the David lovers out there. Goliath will come out of this match victorious.

NewRegional: I want to believe in Brandeis, and I love how their run is causing Pool C pandemonium. If all the matches finished out, I think I can make a case for Brandeis getting to 4 points, but I just don’t think they’ll be able to get to 5. Emory will clinch before that though.

Emory def Brandeis 5-2

newCentral: Emory def. Brandeis 5-0 (if they sweep), 5-3 (if they don’t)
