Players of the Week: 03/04/19 – 03/10/19

REGIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: 03/4/19-03/10/19

It’s the start of many spring break weeks so we’re taking you to some place better than Florida and California put together…BlogLand! Congrats to this week’s winners and look out for a ton of content this week as we have a bunch of teams on spring break leading up to next weekend’s Stag Hen!

A-SOUTH

Patrick “Tijuana” Hughes

Player: Patrick Hughes

Team: Mary Washington

Results: 2-0 singles 1-1 doubles vs PP and Redlands

Recap:

That is all.

What’s next: idk, some matches on the east coast

Honorable Mention: Cole Tecce (UMW), Robert Levin (CMU)

Favorite spring break tennis memory: When NewCentral slipped on an In N Out wrapper into a pile of ketchup.

What you’d do if you had a spring break now: Take NewCentral to In N Out

NewD3CENTRAL

Matthew “Myrtle Beach” Chen

Player: Matthew Chen

Team: Case

Results: 2-0 against CMU (4-5 loss tho); 2-0 against Scranton WHAT? The Electric City.

Recap: Chennessey continues their winning ways. Matt Chen and Zach Hennessey kept Case in their most recent match with Chicago preventing an 0-3 sweep. He then followed that effort with a season-defining win over the CMU GOAT, Daniel Levine. With performances like this, Matt Chen will leave Fojtasek’s career at 1 in the rearview mirror as he heads towards Krimbill Heights. While I dont think that his match with Zalenski/Diehl will be the swing match for the dual score, I do think that it will carry immense importance looking forward to Individuals.

What’s next: Spring Break FOREVER – Triple Header: Hampden-Sydney, Wheaton, and Millsaps; Trinity TX, Double Header: Austin, Kenyon; Double Header: Amherst, Dickinson.

Honorable Mention: The Fence that ripped my mans shorts

Favorite spring break memory: Problem Solving in the Hotel

What you’d do if you had a spring break now: Take ASouth to Shake Shack.

NE

Princeton “Daytona” Carter

Player: Princeton Carter

Team: Wesleyan

Results: 1-0 at #2 doubles & 1-0 at #5 singles

Recap: Pretty simple. You clinch your extremely tight match against a top-15 team, you get a big boost in the POTW standings. Hurricane Carter teamed with doubles specialist Zach Fleischman to win the doubles swing match and give the Cards a lead, then he clinched the match for his team by the clutch score of 7-5 in the 3rd. Prince has clinched matches in the past, but setting the example early for this young and impressionable team is exactly what a team captain should do.

What’s next: Wes’ week from hell continues with Trinity Tx on Monday, Wash U on Tuesday, CMU on Wednesday and finally Ithaca on Friday.

Honorable Mention: Lubo Cuba (Midd), Aleksandr Samets (Midd), the entire Colby team

Favorite spring break memory: Pool time

What you’d do if you had a spring break now: Close my computer during daylight…

NewDIIIWEST

Varun “Fort Lauderdale” Shanker

Player: Varun Shanker

Team: Caltech

Results: 4-0 at #1 singles and #1 doubles (only losing 13 games in the last two matches)

Recap: Shanker has been leading his team the right way so far this year, with his last two wins against Rhodes and Vassar coming in dominant fashion. His win against a now very hot David Aizenberg earlier in the season went a little unnoticed, but great to see Varun getting off to a hot start this year on both the singles and doubles court.

What’s next: An onslaught of Spring Break matches with some KEY matchups looming against Whitman, George Fox, and Redlands. Also, some fun tests against the likes of Williams and Tufts.

Honorable Mention: Thomas Reznick (Redlands), Andreas Immergluck (Whitman), Alexander Joseph (Southwestern)

Favorite spring break memory: Having the whole campus to ourselves – some quality dog grilling and disc flipping on the lawn were in order

What you’d do if you had a spring break now: Hawaii please

REGIONAL AS

Ryan “Cancun” Macy

Player: Ryan Macy

Team: Christopher Newport

Results: 3-1 against Chapman and Redlands

Recap: Christopher Newport was a team that admittedly I was a little harsh with and had pretty much written off for the rest of the season, but they let the racquets do the talking and I am eating my words.  I thought that Redlands was going to blow the Captains out of the water but this team fought like crazy and deserves some recognition. Ryan Macy had himself one hell of a week and went 3-1 at #1 doubles and #3 singles. Macy has had some pretty good results on the season including a very good win over Hopkins’ Austin Gu and will be very important piece for this team moving forward. Oh… and the best part is… he’s a FRESHMAN. Good news Captains, you have yourself a future star.

What’s next: They get a little rest after a tough spring break trip and take on Centre College this weekend.

Honorable Mention: Ritwik Chatterjee (Rhodes), Alex Fedor (W&L), Josh Moskovitz (Haverford)

Favorite spring break memory: Going up 2-1 after doubles on the #1 team in the country and being the most ballin’ hype guy ever

What you’d do if you had a spring break now: Sip Mai Tais and Margs on a beach somewhere

REGIONAL NE/C

Thomas “Jamaica” Wright

Player: Thomas Wright

Team: TCNJ

Results: Won both singles and doubles (including the clincher) in a 5-4 win over Salisbury.

Recap: The junior, alongside, Mitchel Sanders, won TCNJ’s only doubles match against Salisbury (though all three matches were 8-7!), and then won the decider with the match at 4-4, coming back from a set down to defeat Matthew Ryan 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, a huge win for the Lions to keep them in the driver’s seat for Pool B.

What’s next: The Lions have four interesting matches in the next couple of weeks, starting with NYU (who also just beat Salisbury 5-4) and then Haverford. I’m most excited for their match with UW-Whitewater, a matchup between two teams that certainly haven’t played each other any time recently (if ever before) that has serious Pool B implications. Finally, that same weekend they will face Mary Washington, who’s hosting their match with UWW.

Honorable Mention: Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez (RPI), Noah Guillermo (UWW), Josh Piatos (NYU)

Favorite spring break memory: The first outdoor hit in many months

What you’d do if you had a spring break now: Go to Florida or California to watch D3 Tennis. Or maybe I’d go skiing.

NEWREGIONAL

Ross “South Padre” Derose

Player: Ross Derose

Team: Trinity CT

Results: 2-0 vs Babson (#1 doubles, #2 singles)

Recap: The freshman from Buffalo put together a strong first weekend for the Bants, partnering with Courtland Boyle to take out a strong #1 team in De Mendiola and Rosenbluth. He then followed it up with a win at #2 singles over Andre Libnic, taking him out 7-6 in the third in a match that Trinity lost 5-4. I thought Babson was going to cruise through this match, but it ended up being a lot tighter than they would have liked.

What’s next: Trinity is off until next weekend, when they travel to California for spring break and take on Whittier, Bowdoin, Salisbury and Cal Lutheran.

Honorable Mention: Adam Tzeng (Brandeis), Jonathan Chung (Pacific)

Favorite spring break memory: Coach whipping up dinner and eating it by the pool

What you’d do if you had a spring break now: Spend a week down at spring training

Like…in life? Niko was 1-0 in singles and doubles last week and both came in a non-DIII match. That said, feel free to send us any nominations for POTW via email or on Twitter

I’ve started reading these posts recently since I discovered them on the tennisrecruiting site, in the bottom left corner. You guys are funny. Very witty. However… you guys cover the guys a lot more than the women. As the mother of a female Eagle, please cover the women equally.

Thank you for reading the Blog! I apologize for our lack of coverage on the women’s side – we are a few years behind the mens side and have significantly less (wo)man-power to put out articles at the same pace. We are doing our best to cover the women’s side, which definitely deserves more coverage. I appreciate your patience. If there are any articles in particular that you’d like to see, I’d love to hear your opinion. You can comment or email me directly at d3asouthwomens@gmail.com. Go Emory!
