D3 Siblings of The Decade Bracket

NewD3Central: Brackets for “x” are very popular this time of year and the incredible excitement from both of this year’s NCAA Tournaments make them more relevant than ever – remaining in the forefront of everyone’s mind far longer than years past. So with March Madness chillin in the penumbra, we decided to take our running list of nominees for d3 siblings of the decade and create a bracket. Below you’ll find a bracket consisting of 32 teams: seeded 1-32. However, before filling out your own bracket you should understand: how we created the bracket, why there may be omissions, what we plan on doing with this bracket series, and finally how we’ll substantiate our arguments on who moves forward and becomes D3 Siblings of the Decade.

How did we get here?

D3RegionalNEC: Clearly, last Wednesday was a slow day at work for the Bloggers as the Group Chat was on fire, with probably at least 600 messages throughout the day. While many topics were covered, late in the evening we started discussing the best D3 Tennis siblings of the past decade. The list grew quickly as there are an impressive number of families with remarkable pedigrees in the D3 Tennis world. D3RegionalAS had the wise idea to get a Google Doc going so we could keep a list, and now we present that “list” to you. We’re certain we’ve forgotten many families, so we encourage you to add your favorite D3 Tennis siblings in the comments below.

How did you make the bracket?

NewD3CentralAs stated above, one night in the blog chat we started discussing some of the most notable siblings in d3 tennis and shortly after a master list of teams was created. That list was then ranked 1-30 by how many combined wins the siblings earned in their careers. The seedings and matchups are based solely off of combined d3 wins (hopefully…we may have miscounted but it’s fine, we’re not superheroes after all).

What’s the criteria for who’s in the bracket?
Some sibling pairings were omitted because they were too old or young for the 2008-2018 decade of the d3 tennis that we’re examining. Other siblings were omitted because one of them had racked up triple digit wins while their brother or sister had racked up considerably less. We tried to make sure that both players were/are playing and made an immense program or national impact. And unfortunately some siblings were omitted simply because we forgot – sorry.

Exceptions and Things to note about the bracket:

Lok Sze Leung win total includes wins at Northwestern*

Rachel Kahan wins are from Duke but she coaches Midd women now, so she’s in*

Some sibling pairings are actually groups of three, win totals combine all three but this only impacts seeding*

Lim’s (CMS) win total was not a seeding factor for them since they were a late addition*

What are your plans for this bracket?

Originally we were going to model our d3 tennis siblings feature after the remember some guys/girls articles and take our own trip down memory lane. But once the bracket idea arose we knew we could combine the two, so every Wednesday we’ll be posting an update on the sibling bracket with articles highlighting the accomplishments of these players and supplying rationales behind our selections.

How are you going to select who moves forward?

Speaking of rationales, how are we going to select who moves forward? A specifically outlined rubric would be helpful but we’re not about that life. All of the bloggers are uniquely subjective, so each blogger will be selecting who moves forward in their bracket based on their own criteria that they will (hopefully) explain and defend in the following articles, comment sections, and DMs. We can guarantee this about all of our respective rubrics: it definitely won’t be a wins-centric model.

Without further ado here are all four quarters of: The 2018 D3Tennis Siblings of the Decade Bracket – (combined wins total)

Gotta love a good draw, and thank you to NewD3Central for creating this bracket. AS here, and I’ll briefly take you through the participants. You’ll see a corresponding number next to each pair or trio on the draw, this is representative of our initial seeding. You will also find each sibling group’s hashtag, feel free to crush it on twitter. For once, I’m okay with you @’ing me.

#1. Jake and Megan Humphreys, UWW – Warhawks forever. The Humphreys duo always filled our twitter feeds with Ws. #HumpDay

#2. Michael and Chris Goodwin, Emory – Intensity be damned. The nonchalant Goodwin brothers beat you on the court and looked bored doing it.  #FingerLickinGoodwin

#3 Matt, Dan, and Jamie Solomon, Whitman, Colorado College, and Pomona Pitzer – Our first trio hails from a variety of schools and brings a West Coast flair to the bracket. #Solomonsters

#4 Motasem, Mohanad, and Mouaad Alhouni – ALHOUNI BROS. The GAC trio from Libya are one of our favorite trios and span across many years. #GACFam

#5 Kai-Yuen and Lok-Sze Leung, Skidmore and Middlebury – One of the winningest duos of all time, the Leungs and their hyphenated names are considered some of the most successful brother-sister duos in DIII history. #LeungMoney

#6 Tim and Chris Rosensteel, Kenyon and Stevens – The Rosensteels brought big forehands and a lot of flat shots to the DIII tennis landscape…#ATP point #MenOfRosensteel

#7 Morgan and Courtney Lawless, Whitman – Our first sister duo hails from Whitman, and with 274 total wins between them they are a force to be reckoned with. #FLawless

#8 Julie and Jose Raventos, Williams – Both played #1 for Williams, and Julie is the only player in DIII history to beat Eudice Chong in a dual match. Count the championships! #EphYeah

#9 Mark and Rachel Kahan, Amherst and Duke (and a Middlebury Coach) – While Rachel did not play DIII, she does coach it currently. The Kahan duo is definitely known for having ice in their veins. #WrathOfKahan

#10 CJ and Cameron Krimbill, Case Western and Redlands – BRING THE SHADES. CJ and Cameron combine to be a blast from the past and the present. ONNNNNNN ITTTTTTTT! #TheKrimReapers

#11 Tommy and Brad Entwistle, GAC – Blog love runs in this family. The Entwistles are a great definition of GAC Tennis. #EntwistleWhileYouWork

#12 Michael and Will Drougas, Oberlin and Case Western – The Drougas bros borne of fire and ice are/were the backbones of their teams. Will has had his fair share of intense clinching matches and Michael hasn’t missed a backhand since ‘06. #MauriceJonesDrougas

#13 Luke and Tess Trinka, Bowdoin – Luke is recently graduated, but the Trinka dream lives on with Tess at Bowdoin. #GreatMindsTrinkalike

#14 Andrew and Ben Guzick, Vassar – This brotherly duo from the Eastern Section played a huge role in making the Vassar program relevant on the national scene. #GuzClues

#15 Tyler and Casey Cempre, Denison – The unique game styles of this duo hailed from the friendly confines of Denison to become a somewhat household name. One of them currently coaches Rhodes! #CempreFidelis

#16 Dillon and Brooke Pottish, Emory and Hopkins – UNDERSEEDED ALERT. Potentially the best player in the history of Men’s DIII paired with a solid sister is ranked #16 in our bracket. 87% career winning percentage. #PottishOfGold

#17 Katie, Molly, and Dorrie Paradies, Middlebury – Our first SISTER TRIO notched a sh*t ton of wins at Middlebury and bring the girl power to this draw. #ThreeTicketsToParadies

#18 Branden and Tytus Metzler, Kalamazoo – Everyone remembers Branden’s run to the NCAA Individual Championship match at Kalamazoo two years ago. Not to mention we got a dude named TYTUS. #ElectricKZoo

#19 Brenden and Gordon Barrows, Lewis & Clark – Welcome to the P10s! They’ve both gotten POTW love this year. Let’s give it up for the Barrow Bros. #WheelBarrows

#20 Sarah and Katherine Hughes, Oberlin and Middlebury – WIth 174 wins, the duo from two very different schools comes in at #20 in our bracket challenge. #HughesLineIsItAnyway?

#21 Patrick and Chase Lipscomb, Redlands – Death, Taxes and a silky smooth Lipscomb forehand. Keep it to the backhand side against this duo. #SilkySmooth

#22 Yassine and Hamid Derbani, GAC and Middlebury – This international brother duo from Morocco holds down important spots on top 10 teams. #MoroccanMissiles

#23 Rithwick and Ramsathwick Pathireddy, Caltech – Gotta love a Caltech (name is correct) duo in here, and the Pathireddy brothers are an outstanding representative of the program. #GetPathireddyForThis

#24 Sachin and Ananth Raghavan, Williams – The duo known as the RAGHAVANI anchor a Williams lineup currently ranked #5 in the nation. #FearTheRaghavani

#25 Gabby and Lydia Vendetti, Colby – With 100+ wins, this Colby sister duo brings a nice mix from a little known program. #VforVendetti

#26 Josh and Sam Gearou, Pomona Pitzer – The Gearous are one of DIIIWest’s favorite duos, and their craftiness could cause some upsets in this draw. #MetalGearouSolid

#27 Thomas, Simon, and Thibault Vernier, Swarthmore – The Verniers have really just made their mark on the national scene this year with a very strong ASouth ITA. This trio of brothers certainly represent the grittiness of Swarthmore tennis. #HouseofVernier

#28 Kristen and Mikey Lim, CMS – An egregious miss on our part to not include the Lims in our original posting. Look for the Lims to make some serious noise behind their championship pedigrees. A true power duo. Kristen brought home a National Title while Mikey brought home All America honors and a dozen sweat stained caps. #Limsanity, #Limtensity, #LimpossibleIsNothing

#29 Jay and Rex Glickman, Tufts and Trinity CT – The Glickman brothers have been top of the lineup players in the Northeast for years with young Rex still killing it for the Bantams. GLIIIIIIICK SQUAAAAAADDDD #GlickSquad

#30 Austin and Tyler Barr, Williams and MIT – The Barr Bros are one of our modern duos, hailing from the Midwest to play big time positions in the NE tennis world. #BarrNone

#31 Helen and Zoe Klass-Warch, Wesleyan – This senior/freshman duo from Wesleyan hails from Minnesota, so they must be nice. Helen is a former All-American in doubles with Eudice Chong, and Zoe was a top 100 recruit last year. #KeepItKlassy

#32 Margot and Maddie Shea, Tufts and CMS – Another sister duo but on different sides of the nation, this is a pair with not many current wins to their name but are definitely up and comers. #TwoShea

Look for our first round picks and analysis to come out next #BlogWednesday! Please comment, tweet, or email any of us with your brackets, ideas, comments, and siblings we may have missed.

HAHAHAHAHAHA Davis and his partner beat that Kenyon team (Geier/Kaye) that won NCAAs, so you can add an Indirect Championship to the accolades, but Kathleen is doing the heavy lifting in this duo for sure!!
