Blogger Perspective
Despite being located and competing in the Northeast, the University of Rochester belongs to the UAA Conference, one of the two best conferences in D3 Men’s Tennis. Academically, U of R has a lot in common with its conference rivals, featuring a well-regarded engineering department, a very strong business school, but also a robust number of areas to study within the humanities. While Pre-Med tends to be a very popular track for incoming freshmen, the school’s extremely flexible curriculum allows students to explore various interests and many end up switching majors during their first or second years.
Despite the typically cold and snowy winters, Rochester is a city featuring beautiful late summers and falls, giving teams the chance to play outside in ideal conditions for the entire fall season. And when the snow does begin, the University features one of the better indoor tennis facilities in D3 tennis, with four dedicated indoor tennis courts located in the heart of campus. While the team typically does not reach the national rankings, they have more recently been ranked in the 15-20 range of the Northeast Region. Head Coach Matthew Nielsen, who also coaches the women’s team, brings DI playing experience from his time at Penn State. Much like other UAA schools, student-athletes at Rochester have their hands full between academic commitments and tennis. Like most DIII institutions, players need to be willing to work hard and manage their time well in order to succeed at Rochester. The current lineup reflects the diversity of the school, with local players but also as far away as Taiwan, Japan and India. Despite not quite reaching the tennis heights of their conference foes, Rochester will provide an outstanding education with a competitive tennis program in a mid-sized Northeastern location.
