Blogger Perspective: Carnegie Mellon is a nationally recognized research university with particular specialties in Engineering and Computer Science. The tennis program has turned in several top 10 national performances in the past decade and they are consistently looking for the formula to break into the group of the nation’s elite teams. As you can see from the sample starter profiles, Coach Andy Girard has recruited about as well as anyone in the country, which has kept them competitive with the best teams in the nation in recent years. They compete in the UAA, which, along with the NESCAC, is one of the two strongest conferences in the country. Carnegie Mellon students are traditionally very studious a la Chicago or Johns Hopkins. Given the school’s urban setting and no indoor courts on campus, they have less access to court time in the winter months, which makes the Tartan’s continued presence in the top-10 all the more impressive. CMU is usually viewed as a more classic D3 program where academics are the clear top priority.
As previously stated, CMU is among the most recognized institutions in the STEM fields nationwide, and is an ideal spot for a student looking to study Engineering. By coupling a recent recruiting inroad in California with a traditionally strong recruiting focus in Chicago and the Mid-Atlantic, they continue to inch toward UAA frontrunners Emory and Wash U. The setting of the school in Pittsburgh gives students access to multiple major cities, career-wise; however, Silicon Valley is a popular landing destination for alums. Overall, Coach Girard has built a perennial top-10 powerhouse, and a couple motivated recruits could take this program to the next level.
