Blogger Perspective: As recently as 2011, Case Western was a non-factor in the D3 tennis season. Coach Todd Wojtkowski changed that drastically and now has Case consistently finishing in the top fifteen teams in the country. He has presented the opportunity for his players to thrive in a D1-like tennis program and recruits personalities to fit this style. This has brought great success to the Case program including an NCAA quarterfinal appearance in 2014 which was a meteoric rise given that they were unranked only a few years prior. Case has brought in a couple of 4-Star players throughout the years, but this team is primarily comprised of 3-Stars and lower who want to work hard. This team has the attitude of having a chip on their shoulder and this comes out in their on-court persona where they are typically very loud and get under the skin of their opponents. While most D3 teams don’t look forward to playing the Spartans, one thing that is guaranteed is that they are extremely well respected for their work ethic and desire to win.
Case also has an excellent academic reputation is one of the top schools in the Midwest. Much like Johns Hopkins and CMU, Case is known for their difficult academics with a heavy focus on STEM fields. The majority of their recruiting is done in the Midwest but they have begun to attract players nationwide. Case competes in the UAA and has recently hosted their ITA Indoor Championships in February several times. Players at Case certainly take their tennis very seriously and this includes significant off-court training, but the academic experience for players is still outstanding.
