Blogger Perspective: Pomona-Pitzer, comprised of two Claremont consortium colleges, is often seen as the little brother of CMS in D3 tennis. Until the 2015 season, P-P wasn’t seen as a truly top program, but that all changed when the Sagehens ended up finishing 4th in the country with two in-season wins over eventual Final Four teams. The Hens now consistently churn out top 15 seasons, and play most of their matches at home on their gorgeous campus. Fourth year coach Steve Bickham and his staff of strong assistants keep this team competitive with the top teams in the country, including their neighbor CMS. P-P often has mid-day matches throughout the month of March against teams on spring break, so it can sometimes be difficult for players to juggle class and tennis in the heart of the season. One issue for the P-P tennis program is that it is difficult to go deep into the NCAA tournament given their proximity to neighbor and perennial top five team CMS. Nevertheless, with the opportunity to play about 20 ranked teams every season, this is a great landing spot for recruits looking for lots of quality match experience.
Academically, it is important to distinguish between the two colleges, Pomona and Pitzer. Pomona College is among the most prestigious liberal arts schools in the country, sometimes called the “Harvard of the West Coast.” Pitzer is not as highly ranked, but is just as selective, and chooses its students based on fit with the campus personality, which tends to be quirky and creative (no standardized tests are required). Athletes can take classes at any of the consortium colleges, and players are known to take academics very seriously. Both colleges provide a strong liberal arts education in a gorgeous Southern California setting. While many east coast players come here for school, their California ties are still strong.
