Blogger Perspective: In the eyes of our panel, Bowdoin took a huge step forward in 2016 by winning the NCAA Team Championship. The Polar Bears had not previously been to the Final Four but put together a magical run to take the title away from NESCAC peer Middlebury. Bowdoin is another NESCAC program currently in the ITA top eight and much of the credit for Bowdoin’s success goes to 6th year head coach Conor Smith. When Smith was hired several years ago from small Bridgewater College, many in the D3 tennis community were questioning whether or not he could succeed while taking a substantial step up in competition. He has far surpassed the expectations of everyone and taken Bowdoin to last year’s national title while also adding a quarterfinal appearance in 2012.

The academics at Bowdoin are outstanding, although they do slightly trail NESCAC peers Amherst and Williams when it comes to reputation. Bowdoin attracts many players from the Tri-state area as well as California and has a picturesque campus in Brunswick, Maine. Sports are big on campus, and, as seems to be the trend in the NESCAC, a robust social life is available. Bowdoin is a top tennis program with a coach who is beloved by his players, and when you couple that with the highly-ranked liberal arts education, it is a school that should be on many players target school list, despite the relative lack of name recognition.
