Blogger Perspective:
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is one of the few public schools being profiled, and as part of the University of Wisconsin system, students reap the benefits of a well-respected state university with tuition costs significantly lower than most top D3 tennis schools. Of particular strength academically is UWW’s College of Business and Economics, with the finance and accounting programs being regarded as among the best in the Midwest among D3 tennis schools. In-state tuition attracts many Wisconsinites to Whitewater, but the team also recruits many players from neighboring Minnesota, as the two states have a reciprocal agreement that allows residents of either state to pay in-state tuition at public universities. While this deal doesn’t exist with Illinois, Coach Frank Barnes has found success recruiting in the Chicagoland area for both the men and women’s teams.
UWW has one of the most successful athletic departments in D3 and teams receive a lot of support. In 2014, the Warhawks had the distinction of winning NCAA championships in football, men’s basketball, and baseball. While men’s tennis is not quite at that same elite level, the Warhawks have a strong tradition and have been a consistent team in the 15-30 range of the national rankings during the past several years. The Warhawks are known within D3 tennis as a team with excellent doubles and the ability to develop players. Student-athletes have access to excellent athletic facilities, including twelve outdoor tennis courts. While there are no indoor courts on campus, the team practices at a local club during the winter. The Whitewater experience is not typical for DIII tennis, but this is a program with a proven track record of success.
