Blogger Perspective:
Located in Washington wine country, Whitman College is the only traditional D3 tennis power in the Pacific Northwest. (They have won the last ten Northwest Conference championships). The typical Whitman player hails from West Coast anywhere between San Diego and British Colombia, but players from elsewhere have found success there too. Though it doesn’t have the name-recognition as some of its liberal arts peers, a degree from Whitman is extremely well-respected in the Pacific Northwest. Many alums work in Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, and the alumni network actively helps current players with job placement. Socially, the campus is tight-knit, and students typically relish outdoor activities in the Blue Mountains (the origin of Whitman’s unusual mascot).
As a tennis program, Whitman is known for developing 2- and 3-star players into national qualifiers and all-Americans. Head Coach Jeff Northam is the program’s engine. He’s one of the longest tenured coaches in D3, and players rave about the family atmosphere he creates through team activities such as whitewater rafting and backpacking. Also helping Whitman are their superb facilities in the heart of campus (6 outdoor courts, 4 indoor courts), all of which have been newly renovated and feature state-of-the-art lighting. One quirk about Whitman is their geographic isolation, which gives them one of the biggest home court advantages in the country. Because of the cost of travel, Whitman used to have a hard time filling their schedule, but thanks to Coach Northam’s summer fundraising, the Blues may be the most well-traveled team in the country and play a dozen ranked teams a season. Overall, a recruit hoping to improve his tennis game in a beautiful PNW setting with a plethora of future career options can’t go wrong with Whitman.
