Whittier has some good players at the top of the line up and some decent freshmen. They were not bad last year and should be better this year. I suspect that they will be top thirty when all is said and done.
Mary Wash may well have suffered from a double header but thats not an excuse, teams play double headers all the time and they didn’t exactly play a nail biter with Pomona. It was an 8-1 score. Furthermore they then lost to Whittier 7-2 so to say that was the only reason won would be an exaggeration. Whittier definitely fits the bill of a sneakily talented team without the consistency which is why they fell in and out of the rankings as the writer stated. I’m not saying Whittier is or was a better team than Mary Wash but to say it was only because of a double header is a very short-sighted approach.
Is there a team there that merits dropping out? Oxy had a good result early in the season, even if Brandeis isn’t that strong. I see no harm in rewarding teams for solid results. It doesn’t cheapen rankings and as more results come in, it will sort itself out.
Other factors weigh in. If that unranked team has a bunch of bad losses to teams nobody has ever heard of, that one win probably won’t be enough to get them in the rankings. On the other hand, if a team is good enough to beat a top 20 team, they probably won’t have many bad losses, and will probably end up in the 30. I’m thinking of Whittier, who beat Mary Washington last year, but followed it up with a couple mystifying losses.

Whittier only beat Mary Wash last year because the Eagles were stupid enough to schedule them on the back end of a tough loss to Pomona.
