Do You Remember the 21st night of September?

Ok let us sing along to UChicago Women’s Tennis’ newest anthem: “Do you remember, the 21st night of September?”. For the first time since 2011 UChicago swept both doubles and singles titles at the ITA Central Regional. That must have been a fun van ride back to Chicago. Congrats and boogie on Maroons!

Here is my take on the tournament….

  • Kalamazoo College was excellent host, and did everything right. Thank you for the hospitality.
  • The Doubles were exciting to follow! There were 6 different schools in the quarterfinals. Interestingly, #8 ranked Chicago and #14 Kenyon were there as expected, however #20 WashU and #26 Denison were not. So who else was there? #29 Hope made it to the Semifinals with Bandrowski/Hallock; #34 Case had 2 teams in the Quarters, with Cartwell/Sundaram making it to the Semis; and unranked North Central also made it to the Quarters. Sundaram, a transfer from Emory, had very good chemistry with her teammate and this is a team to watch as they took out the #1 seeds Lee/Xu from UChicago. The winner of the Doubles draw was Ng/Wang and they cruised to the final without surrendering more than 3 games in any match. In the final they took down Kenyon 6-4, 6-3.
  • The singles were less interesting with only 3 teams through to the Quarterfinals. These teams were: UChicago, Hope and Kenyon. UChicago was dominant with 3 players in the Quarters. Park won the Championship. Hope also had 3 players in the Quarters, and Kenyon had 2.
  • UChicago will send 4 players to the ITA Cup on Oct. 17-20 in Rome, GA.
  • I miss the rivalry between WashU and UChicago. There are many months to go before the official season begins, and with so much training and team bonding to be had between now and then, team dynamics will surely change. Hope had depth on their team and it will be interesting to watch them this coming year compete and climb the ranks.

That’s all for now folks, now back to ……”Do you remember….”
