Women’s Players of the Week: April 29 – May 5

We’re back with another round of POTW! And don’t worry, now that the site’s back up we’ll be coming out with some NCAA reactions soon too! Since most of you will enjoy nice, long road trips in the coming days, we’re making this week music-themed.

ASouth

Mary “Strength of a Raging Fire” Hampton McNeal

Player: Mary Hampton McNeal

Team: Washington and Lee

Results: 2-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in ODAC conference tournament

Recap: “Hamp” was perfect on the weekend in ODAC play and the senior clinched her 100th win in the semifinal match against Randolph.

What’s next: NCAA Regionals, with a second round match slated against Sewanee

Honorable Mention: Danielle Mirabella (Mary Washington, clinched CAC championship with win over CNU)

Favorite warm up song: Be a Man by Shang from Mulan. Gives me the force of a great typhoon.

Least favorite warm up song: Not really applicable to my college days but Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. That song makes me so mad for no reason. Ugh.

NE

Venia “Nala” Yeung

Player: Venia Yeung

Team: Wesleyan

Results: 2-0 at #2 singles and 1-1 at #2 doubles, PLUS the clinch to crown Wes as the 2019 NESCAC Champions!

Recap: Yeung has had a standout freshman year, and continued on her rampage by blanking Bowdoin’s Tasha Christ in the semis before taking a marathon third set win over Midd’s Katy Hughes.

What’s next: NCAAs baby!!!!

Honorable Mention: Dea Koiava (Skidmore), Ashley Teng (MIT), Heather Boehm (Midd)

Favorite warm up song: Circle of Life. It just gets everyone inspired, ya know?

Least favorite warm up song: This might date me but I hated when so many teams had Trumpets by Jason Derulo on their warmup playlists

Central

Amanda “Let Me Take a #Selfie” Bandrowski

Player: Amanda Bandrowski

Team: Hope College

Results: Bandrowski went 2-0 at #1 doubles and 2-0 at #2 singles for Hope College in the MIAA Tournament

Recap: In the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament against Calvin College, Bandrowski won 8-2 at #1 doubles and 6-2 6-2 at #2 singles. In the finals against Kalamazoo, she took a 8-1 win at #1 doubles with partner and #1 player Claire Hallock, then finished off an undefeated championship tournament with a 6-1 6-1 victory at #2 singles to help her team secure a Pool A berth into the NCAAs.

What’s next: NCAAs!!!  Hope will play against Principia in a first round matchup in the Kenyon/CMU pod.

Honorable Mention: Carleton doubles for sweeping doubles against Bethel in the MIAC finals in what was shaping up to be an extremely close match. The final score was 5-2.

Favorite warm up song: Honest or Something Just Like This by the Chainsmokers but remixed so it’s faster. Otherwise it’s so S-L-O-W.

Least favorite warm up song: I don’t really have a least favorite warm up song but I’ll say Shake It Off (Taylor Swift) only because I’ve heard it as part of a warmup playlist way too many times.

West

Catherine “Bulletproof” Allen

Player: Cat Allen

Team: CMS

Results: 2-0 at #1 doubles, 1-0 at #1 singles in SCIACs

Recap: Allen avenged a loss two weeks ago to PP’s Caroline Casper with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the SCIAC final. Those two will probably play again this week, and maybe at Individuals too. Allen also went undefeated in doubles with partner Caroline Cox, picking up wins over Redlands and PP

What’s next: NCAAs for the Athenas and Individuals in both singles and doubles for Allen

Honorable Mention: Some other Athenas. There really wasn’t a lot going on outside of SCIACs this week

Favorite warm up song: Titanium by David Guetta and Sia, and also Closer by the Chainsmokers if I ever stop dancing to it

Least favorite warm up song: Anything with a wobble. I hated it when we had to listen to the guys team play dubstep

D3Analyst

Audrey “Hey, I just met you” Soohoo

Player: Audrey Soohoo

Team: Skidmore

Results: 2-0 at #2 doubles and 1-0 at #5 singles in Liberty League tournament

Recap: Audrey Soohoo didn’t finish her singles match on Saturday, but had a perfect weekend aside from that. She clinched the Liberty League title for Skidmore on Sunday against Vassar with a 6-3, 7-5 win at #5 singles. Skidmore had lost a doubles match and the three remaining singles matches were actually quite close so it was great for Skidmore that Soohoo pulled out the win

What’s next: NCAAs! Skidmore is headed to Wesleyan’s region.

Honorable Mention: Anjie Kayshap (Hopkins, clinched the Centennial title), Ashley Teng (MIT, clinched NEWMAC title), everyone from Wesleyan who killed it in singles against Midd

Favorite warm up song: I need to not answer this question to protect my anonymity

Least favorite warm up song: Call Me Maybe. It gets stuck in your head for the entire day. Or maybe the entire week.
