Women’s Players of the Week: April 8, 2019 – April 14, 2019

Did someone ask for more women’s content? Your friendly women’s bloggers have organized themselves juuuuust enough to bring you a new weekly installment: Player of the Week! We used up all of our productivity power on this, so new power rankings will be next week. If you’re mad, take it up with WestWomens. I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from coaches recently that they would like to see us cover even more teams on the blog, which is something we will be trying to do in the future as we continue to grow. So, for the coaches reading this, we will make every effort to include players from more teams in our POTW considerations. However, we could use your help! If you have a player who was a star this week, shoot any of us an email! I’ll list our addresses at the bottom of the page.

So, I actually don’t watch Game of Thrones — I’m waiting for it to end so I can binge it in 3 days at 2x speed. However, it’s return seemed like a pretty big deal (I get the impression that D3AS doesn’t like Emilia Clarke’s character) so our theme this week is more general and will encompass all TV shows.

Anjie “The King (Queen) of Games” Kashyap

Player: Anjie Kashyap

Team: Johns Hopkins

Results: She went 3-1 at #1singles/#1 doubles on the weekend in Hopkins’ regional grudge matches against CNU (Hopkins won 7-2) and Mary Washington (Hopkins pulled off upset 6-3). Her loss came as a 7-8 loss at #1 dubs against Mary Washington

Recap: Kashyap picked up two very solid regional singles wins this weekend over Summers of Mary Wash and Ranta-aho of CNU. She took out Summers in 3 very tight sets that really turned the tides for her team and helped Hopkins to the 6-3 win. At this point she’s secured her spot in the NCAA individual tournament. She also picked up a solid doubles win over CNU with Sophia Strickland.

What’s next: Centennial conference foes McDaniel and Haverford

Honorable Mention: Elizabeth Lipscomb (convincing singles and doubles wins in Immaculata’s 5-4 win over reigning Atlantic East conference champs Gwynedd Mercy)

The last TV show you binge watched: Oh dear. I wrote these questions and now I have to answer them. I’m still anonymous right? Yu-gi-oh. At 2x speed. I have no explanation.

If your life was a TV show what would it be called: I Heard There’s Chocolate Here – it would be a show where people are doing something very serious (think diffusing a bomb or telling someone they’re terminally ill) and in every episode I knock on the door/window, stick my head in, ask for chocolate, and that’s the end of the episode. You’d never get closure on the plot.

Erika “Rose Nylund” Oku

Player: Erika Oku

Team: Kenyon

Results: Oku went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles against Chicago, Oberlin, and Allegheny.

Recap: Oku had a huge win over Antohi of Chicago in a 13-11 superbreaker.  Oku has all but secured her spot in NCAA individuals as the #4 ranked player in the Central region.  No sophomore slump here.

What’s next: Last regular season match against the College of Wooster and then NCAC Conference Championships.

Honorable Mention: Zoe Park (WashU), Madeleine Paolucci (Case), Lauren O’Malley (John Carroll)

The last TV show you binge watched: Orange is the New Black #Poussey

If your life was a TV show what would it be called: Golden Girls

Keren “Khalessi of Klinching” Khromchenko

Player: Keren Khromchenko

Team: Brandeis

Results: Losses at #3 singles and #2 doubles to Tufts (Tufts won 6-3) and the clinching point over Bowdoin at #3 singles winning 6-0, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2.

Recap: While Khromchenko had a mediocre weekend overall, losing to Tufts’ Obeid and also dropping her dubs match at Tufts,I’m letting it slip because she came in absolutely clutch for Brandeis in their big win over Bowdoin, battling through the third set to deliver the deciding point in the Judges’ favor. Some might argue that going 1-2 on the weekend doesn’t warrant POTW, but Khromchenko showed grit – something that I think is super important for players.

What’s next: The Judges head to UAAs down in Florida, where I’m hoping they cap off a phenomenal season with some big wins and maybe more upsets!

Honorable Mention: Libby Rickeman (MIT), Lily Feldman (Skidmore), Heather Boehm (Midd), Anna Buraya (NYU)

The last TV show you binge watched: You on Netflix. I’m now scared of my own shadow and am jumpy all the time. How do people root for Penn Badgley in this?!?

If your life was a TV show what would it be called: Washed Up – think the not-so-glamorous side of life post-college

Andrea “Jessica Jones” Gu
Mary “Trish Walker” Hill

Player: Andrea Gu & Mary Hill

Team: Whitman

Results: 3-0 at #1 & #2 singles and #1 doubles, with wins over George Fox, Pacific Lutheran, and University of Puget Sound

Recap: Gu has now won four straight at the top singles spot, picking up a 6-2, 6-1 win over GFU’s Sophia Lawrence, winning 6-2, 6-0 against Pacific Lutheran’s Bayley Gochanour, and pulling out a 3-setter over Puget Sound’s Lisa Owen 6-1, 0-6, 6-0. She also continued her dominance at #1 doubles with Mary Hill, dropping only four games on the weekend. Hill, meanwhile, handled Laney Search, Kristi Floyd, and Nicole Bouche without dropping a set

What’s next: Whitman plays Whitworth next Saturday before heading to the NWC tournament, where they will most likely match up against top-seeded Linfield

Honorable Mention: Kathy Joseph (UT-Dallas)

The last TV show you binge watched: I binge watched The OA: Part II on Netflix last month and it absolutely blew my mind. It’s like Inception but replace dreams with death and then start doing interpretive dance.

If your life was a TV show what would it be called: Team Spirit — Think Mean Girls, but told from the perspective of the only girl on the mathletes.

D3WAnalyst

Maggie “Eleven” Dorr
Caroline “Nancy Wheeler” Garrido

Player: Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido

Team: Tufts

Results: 2-0 at #1 doubles with Brandeis and Middlebury, and both went 1-1 in singles. Garrido picked up a singles win against Brandeis and Dorr won at #2 against Middlebury.

Recap: This weekend, Tufts put together a solid win over Brandeis (not an easy feat as evidenced by Brandeis’s win over Bowdoin) and suffered an expected loss to Middlebury. Dorr and Garrido were important in the Brandeis win and in getting Tufts a couple points against Middlebury. They won both doubles matches this weekend, including one over a Middlebury team that has recently taken wins over Emory and Williams. Dorr and Garrido are continuing to have a really solid season at #1 doubles (only one NESCAC loss right now), and I’m incredibly impressed that they’re doing so as a freshman-freshman duo. Dorr also earned a big singles win over Katy Hughes from Middlebury.

What’s next: Tufts plays Wellesley and Connecticut College next weekend, matches they should win handily. Amherst on the 24th will be Tufts’ next big challenge.

Honorable Mention: Ines de Bracamonte from Wheaton (MA). She went 3-0 over the last week, including picking up a win over Rickeman from MIT.

The last TV show you binge watched: I believe Stranger Things but it’s been a while, I’m due to binge something soon.

If your life was a TV show what would it be called: Almost Adulting – because I’m still not a real adult
