D3Siblings of the Decade Bracket 2.0

After dropping our Siblings of the Decade Bracket 1.0 we realized (with a lot of help from the d3 community via comments, DMs, and messages) that we forgot to include some of the best sibling combos of the decade (’08ish-’18). So, we took your suggestions,  searched our own personal L columns and found some more superstar families to add to the bracket. Following our Last Call for nominations we were left with 46 teams that we sorted into a massive bracket. Below you’ll find a handful of things: The Bracket 2.0 quartered for easy viewing within the article, the master list of competitors (win totals* included), each teams hashtag, that we made up – though better suggestions are more than welcome, The Bracket 2.0 in its entirety, my (newD3central) rubric for “winning” this bracket, and lastly our game plan for this series now that The Bracket 2.0 has dropped and matchups have been set (in stone, no more additions).

The Bracket 2.0 (quartered):

Siblings of The Decade Bracket 2.0 Master List (in order of career wins*):

*in many cases the win totals are approximate, which is fine since they’re only used for seeding purposes. Win totals will not be used as the sole reasoning for winning or losing in this bracket. Win totals were used because they gave us a concrete way to create this bracket.

  1. (383) –  Jake & Megan Humphreys UWW – Warhawks forever. The Humphreys duo always filled our twitter feeds with Ws. #HumpDay
  2. (367) –  Chris and Michael Goodwin Emory Intensity be damned. The nonchalant Goodwin brothers beat you on the court and looked bored doing it.  #FingerLickinGoodwin
  3. (360) – Matt, Dan, and Jamie Solomon, Whitman, Colorado College, and Pomona Pitzer – Our first trio hails from a variety of schools and brings a West Coast flair to the bracket. #Solomonsters
  4. (334+) –  Motasem, Mohanad, and Mouaad Alhouni – ALHOUNI BROS. The GAC trio from Libya are one of our favorite trios and span across many years. #GACFam
  5. (327) – Max and Sarah Woods, Wash U and Kalamazoo – When your older brother wins over 170 matches and makes NCAAs, you have a lot to live up to. I think being a 4-time All-American probably does the trick. These two are a top-5 seed for a reason, can’t believe they were left out in 1.0.  #KnockOnWoods
  6. (321) – Kai-Yuen and Lok-Sze Leung, Skidmore and Middlebury – One of the winningest duos of all time, the Leungs and their hyphenated names are considered some of the most successful brother-sister duos in DIII history. #LeungMoney
  7. (315) – Mikey and Kristin Lim, CMS – possibly the most egregious miss from our initial bracket. The elder Lim was a singles all-American and ITA West region senior of the year. Kristin was ok too; she transferred from Cornell and won the NCAA championship in singles in 2011.  #Limsanity
  8. (295) – Jenny and Lindsay Liles, Sewanee – An evenly matched sister duo, the Liles’ both earned about 50% of the total sibling wins. The Liles were so good, that the old D3ASW came out of hiding to tell us about them. #TheXLiles
  9. (293) – Michael, Dan, and Jonny Greenberg, Kenyon, Williams, and  Kenyon – Michael won a national championship as a player, Dan won a national championship as a coach, and Jonny won a national championship in our hearts #ItsEasyBeingGreenberg
  10. (282) – Tim and Chris Rosensteel, Kenyon and Stevens – The Rosensteels brought big forehands and a lot of flat shots to the DIII tennis landscape…#ATP point #MenOfRosensteel
  11. (278) – Kathleen and Davis Elkins, Williams and Wooster – quoting from the comments section “278 wins and 3 national championships (all by Kathleen)”  #TruckerHatsAndPurpleTitles
  12. (274) – Morgan and Courtney Lawless, Whitman – These twins helped establish a brief Whitman women’s tennis dynasty in the NWC, and with 274 total wins between them they are a force to be reckoned with. #FLawless
  13. (274) – Amanda and Jeremy Polster, Kenyon – The Polsters were both 4-year starters at and near the top of the lineup for the Lords, racking up wins in the workman/workwomanlike way typical of their Midwest school #Polstergeist
  14. (272+)  – Julie and Jose Raventos, Williams – Both played #1 for Williams, and Julie is the only player in DIII history to beat Eudice Chong. Count the championships! #EphYeah
  15. (270) – Mark and Rachel Kahan, Amherst and Duke (and a Middlebury Coach) – While Rachel did not play DIII, she does coach it currently. The Kahan duo is definitely known for having ice in their veins. #WrathOfKahan
  16. (256+) – CJ and Cameron Krimbill, Case Western and Redlands – BRING THE SHADES. CJ and Cameron combine to be a blast from the past and the present. ONNNNNNN ITTTTTTTT! #TheKrimReapers
  17. (247+) – Tommy and Brad Entwistle, GAC – Blog love runs in this family. The Entwistles are a great definition of GAC Tennis. #EntwistleWhileYouWork
  18. (243+) – Michael and Will Drougas, Oberlin and Case Western – The Drougas bros borne of fire and ice are/were the backbones of their teams. Will has had his fair share of intense clinching matches and Michael hasn’t missed a backhand since ‘06. #DrougasUnchained
  19. (242+) – Luke and Tess Trinka, Bowdoin – National Champion, Luke is recently graduated, but the Trinka dream lives on with Tess at Bowdoin. #GreatMindsTrinkalike
  20. (241) – Andrew and Ben Guzick, Vassar – This brotherly duo from the Eastern Section played a huge role in making the Vassar program relevant on the national scene. #GuzClues
  21. (219) – Tyler and Casey Cempre, Denison – The unique game styles of this duo hailed from the friendly confines of Denison to become a somewhat household name. One of them currently coaches Rhodes! #CempreFidelis
  22. (218+)  – Jason and Greg Haugen, Wash U and Trinity TX – An Indoors sibling special here, the Haugens always brought the fire, but were considered very classy competitors – cooler than the other side of the pillow.  #Haugendazs
  23. (201) – Dillon and Brooke Pottish, Emory and Hopkins – UNDERSEEDED ALERT. Potentially the best player in the history of Men’s DIII paired with a solid sister is ranked #23 in our bracket. 87% career winning percentage. #PottishOfGold
  24. (189) – Katie, Molly, and Dorrie Paradies, Middlebury – Our first SISTER TRIO notched a sh*t ton of wins at Middlebury and bring the girl power to this draw. #ThreeTicketsToParadies
  25. (181) – Anna and Daniel Becker, Kenyon – Daniel Becker is global marketing director at Babolat, and if he wanted to throw a frew free sticks our way, we wouldn’t say no.  #BendItLikeBecker
  26. (181) – Sam and Jacki Cychosz, Luther – Aside from the question of how to pronounce their name, this accomplished duo begs the question: how to weigh many wins for Luther against fewer wins against more accomplished DIII teams #Pikachu!CychoszYou
  27. (174+) – Branden and Tytus Metzler, Kalamazoo – Everyone remembers Branden’s run to the NCAA Individual Championship match at Kalamazoo two years ago. Not to mention we got a dude named TYTUS. #ElectricKZoo
  28. (164) Eric and Spencer MacColl, CMS –  Sifting through these brothers CMS pages was a whole lot of reading, and we still barely know anything about them. Eric is an avid musician, though. #MacCollOfDuty
  29. (162+) Brad and Nick Cummins, Redlands – The elder Cummins and Lipscomb carried Redlands for four year. Now the younger Cummins and Lipscomb will have to bring the Dawgs back from a hazing scandal  #KnockKnockCummins
  30. (154+) – Sarah and Katherine Hughes, Oberlin and Middlebury – WIth 174 wins, the duo of 1s from two very different schools comes in at #30 in our bracket challenge. #HughesLineIsItAnyway?
  31. (151+) – Brenden and Gordon Barrows, Lewis & Clark – Welcome to the P10s! They’ve both gotten POTW love this year. Let’s give it up for the Barrow Bros. #WheelBarrows
  32. (147+) Cole and Trent Schneider, Luther –  Well, I know one of these guys is a DIII Tennis Junkie, and well, Cole has a great smile. #KingsofTheNorse
  33. (146+) – Patrick and Chase Lipscomb, Redlands – Death, Taxes and a silky smooth Lipscomb forehand. Keep it to the backhand side against this duo.  #TheFlamingLipscombs
  34. (140) – Aurora and Summer Garrison, Lewis & Clark – These two put LC women’s tennis on the map, and their parents apparently would fit right in with those Portland hipsters #GarrisonTzu
  35. (137+) – Yassine and Hamid Derbani, GAC and Middlebury – This international brother duo from Morocco holds down important spots on top 10 teams. #MoroccanMissiles
  36. (137) Joey and Frankie Fischer, UT Tyler – Two transfers traveled to Tyler Texas and brought some American flavor to Bizot’s international cadre. Frankie even carried some old dude to all-American honors in doubles. #OneFischerTwoFischerRedFischerBlueFischer
  37. (131+) – Rithwick and Ramsathwick Pathireddy, Caltech – Gotta love a Caltech (name is correct) duo in here, and the Pathireddy brothers are an outstanding representative of the program. #GetPathireddyForThis
  38. (112+) – Sachin and Ananth Raghavan, Williams – The duo known as the RAGHAVANI anchor a Williams lineup currently ranked #4 in the nation. #FearTheRaghavani
  39. (105+) – Gabby and Lydia Vendetti, Colby – With 100+ wins, this Colby sister duo brings a nice mix from a little known program. #VforVendetti
  40. (102+) – Josh and Sam Gearou, Pomona Pitzer – The Gearous are one of DIIIWest’s favorite duos, and their craftiness could cause some upsets in this draw. #MetalGearouSolid
  41. (99+) Zach and Howard Weiss, Williams – Our second pair of Brother Ephs were both a part of the 2013 NCAA title run that brought sibling bracket competitor Coach Greenberg a championship.  #ASongOfWeissAndFire
  42. (97+) – Thomas, Simon, and Thibault Vernier, Swarthmore – The Verniers have really just made their mark on the national scene this year with a very strong ASouth ITA. This trio of brothers certainly represent the grittiness of Swarthmore tennis. #HouseofVernier
  43. (96+) – Jay and Rex Glickman, Tufts and Trinity CT – The Glickman brothers have been top of the lineup players in the Northeast for years with young Rex still killing it for the Bantams. GLIIIIIIICK SQUAAAAAADDDD #GlickSquad
  44. (92+) – Austin and Tyler Barr, Williams and MIT – The Barr Bros are one of our modern duos, hailing from the Midwest to play big time positions in the NE tennis world. #BarrNone
  45. (91+) – Helen and Zoe Klass-Warch, Wesleyan – This senior/freshman duo from Wesleyan hails from Minnesota, so they must be nice. Helen is a former All-American in doubles with Eudice, and Zoe was a top 100 recruit last year. #KeepItKlassy
  46. (50+) – Margot and Maddie Shea, Tufts and CMS – Another sister duo but on different sides of the nation, this is a pair with not many current wins to their name but are definitely up and comers. #TwoShea

The Bracket 2.0 Full:

Now What:

Each blogger will have their own criteria on which they make their decisions. For Example: My (@newD3Central) decisions will be informed by a three-prong test each awarding a point (2 to win…duh). The first prong will be decided by how would these siblings would do against each other in a 1 doubles, 2 singles match format right now. The second prong will compare the impacts that the sibling pairs had on their schools (how much better did your school’s program get during your tenure?). And lastly, the third prong will revolve around balance – how evenly split are the accolades and wins between the siblings with the prong’s point being awarded to the most balanced sibling team.

The first round features 14 matchups that will narrow our 46 team field down to 32. The Blog will be giving our round by round analysis over the coming days and weeks. We’ll function as a Tribal Council (shoutout DIIIWest) and vote for our respective pairings based on our own rubrics, and the majority’s decision will decide who progresses to the next round. I’m sure one of D3AS’ criteria will be based on twitter polls, so be on the lookout and give us your opinions on who should move forward in this tournament of champions and why.

  1. Bob Haugen

Don’t forget Matt Haugen, as part of the Haugen siblings, He was at Kenyon College from ’04-’06, a little outside of your qualification for “decade”. But has also coached at both Dension and Trinity (TX) since graduating.

  3. One of Woot's former players

“Frankie even carried some old dude to all-American honors in doubles.” Coach Woot probably still reads this even though he’s big time now.

  4. Matt Solomonster

Holy shit. This is the second coolest thing that’s ever happened to me outside of winning The Price is Right.
