BREAKING NEWS: Redlands hazing update

As you probably know by now, Redlands has cancelled all of their matches over the past week due to an ongoing investigation into team hazing. Recently a sentence was given. Those players found to the most responsible have been dismissed from the team, while those players found to be bearing some responsibility have been suspended for the remainder of the 2018 season. Redlands is allowed to play the remaining SCIAC matches on their schedule, beginning Friday, March 30th against Pomona-Pitzer, but will not be allowed to play in the conference tournament, NCAAs, or the Ojai tournament. This is obviously a developing situation, and we will bring you more information as soon as we have it. Beginning Saturday morning, we will be running a full series on hazing, including perspectives from different former student-athletes and coaches, led by our own Adam Van Zee. This is an issue we believe to be very important, and AVZ’s Saturday morning article might be the most important (and honestly one of the best) things we will have ever posted. Stay tuned…

  1. An irrelevant opinion

Hence this article being referenced with the recent comment after SW vs. Redlands…. The claim of being “hated” and having “no ethics” as players and coaches seems a bit outside of the relevance of inter squad hazing. Sure hazing is not a great look for a program and surely gives you a bad rep, but do other teams hate Redlands for it?? I think how you conduct yourselves as a team against other teams during duel matches leaves far greater an impact on your reputation as a program when it comes to playing the school. The choices that players make among themselves as a team on their own campus is their business, whether they’re intelligent choices or not. However, you have complete control over how you present yourself as players, coaches, and a team when you play other schools. Not to mention having respect for the school that’s hosting you. Southwestern being “the most hated team” is probably a stretch, but with the beef against GFU a few years ago and now this, it raises an eyebrow. Southwestern has a lot of work to do before they can defend a bad reputation with legit national results. Break the top 15, then give your opponents a reason to dislike you.

I’ve never seen two college coaches look the other way while their players behave badly on the court. The on court shenanigans are a direct reflection on their staff. Attention all disrespectful juniors… SW Texas is looking for a few unethical ten year olds to join their squad!

This doesn’t surprise me at this school, this is the reason i left Boise State. I was hazed there including being physically, verbally and emotionally. Hope the kids are okay. Just ridiculous that this still happens. Want to know more about Redlands, only the stories i know about what’s else went down at Redlands as well…

  3. SCIAC Team
