Women’s Player of the Week! – April 13th-18th

NCAA WOMEN’S REGIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: APRIL 13th-18th

Hi Tennis Fans!! I have been a bit M.I.A. recently due to a variety of reasons but I am back with a POTW for this week!! The bloggers have been writing up the wahzoo and the players have been giving us plenty to talk about!

Here goes…

A-SOUTH

CG

Player: Chrissy Gaul

Team: Mary Washington

Results: 2-0 at #3 Doubles, 2-0 at #4 Singles

Recap: It was a slow week in the ASouth as UMW was the only team that really played two matches, so that limited my ability to pick some big names.  That being said, Chrissy Gaul held down the bottom of the lineup against Christopher Newport and Salisbury, two closeby competitors.  Gaul didn’t even come close to dropping a match so let’s give her that weekly nod.

What’s next: A big match against Johns Hopkins and then the CAC Championship.

Honorary Mention: D3NEW

CENTRAL

KG

Player: Kaylan Griffith

Team: Washington University of St. Louis

Results: 3-0 at #6 singles, 3-0 at #3 doubles

Recap: Griffith was bigtime for the Bears this past week, playing a big part in their win over Chicago as well as netting some nice wins against UTT and UWW.  In the 6-3 win over Chicago, she won a tight three setter at #6 singles after previously losing at the same spot to Chicago the match prior.  Nice comeback for Kaylan!

What’s next: UAAs!

Honorary Mention: Rebecca Ho (Wash U), Megan Tang (Chicago)

NE

MF

Player: MELITA!

Team: Trinity College (CT)

Results: 3-0 in doubles, 2-1 in singles

Recap: Trinity started the spring season dismally but the top of their lineup has stepped up big time and brought in a HUGE 5-4 win against Tufts last week to essentially take the 6th and final spot in the NESCACs.  Individually, Melita was 3-0 at #1 doubles (wins over Amherst, Brandeis, and Tufts), and 2-1 at #1 singles (wins over Brandeis and Tufts).

What’s next: Hamilton, Colby, Wesleyan, Skidmore, NESCACs.  The match with Wesleyan will determine who is the #5 seed and who is the #6 seed in the NESCACs.  It will also showcase MELITA vs EUDICE at the top court.  The match with Skidmore will have big ranking implications.

Honorary Mention:  MELITA and TrinTrin all the way.  At the beginning of the season I would have never predicted that they would have a chance at NESCACs and they have proven me so wrong.  They are a dangerous team right now.

WEST

LM

Player: Laina Matsuda

Team: University of La Verne

Results: Wins in both disciplines over Redlands, Whittier and Chapman. Solid overall season at #1 Doubs and #1 Singles. Only losses to CMS in Singles despite tricky schedule.

What’s next: THE OJAI; SCIAC Championships

Honorary Mention: Sarah Kukino – CMS
