NCAA WOMEN’S REGIONAL PLAYERS OF THE MONTH: February
Hey Tennis Fans!! Check this out, the FIRST ever Women’s Player of the Month honors!! Winners were selected by each Regional blogger based on player efforts and results over the month of February.
And the Award goes to………
A-SOUTH
Player: Jody Law
Team: Johns Hopkins University
Results: 3-0 singles at Indoors, 2-0 doubles at indoors
Recap: Jody Law went absolutely beserk at Indoor Nationals, losing 0 (that’s right, 0) matches at #4 singles and #3 doubles. While that is already impressive given the level of competition, Law clinched every match (I think). Her three set victory over University of Chicago was the only 3-setter in singles in a 5-4 match. Her victory against CMU in the final was also the clincher, sending Hopkins to another Indoor National Championship. Talk about a cold blooded killer. Her achievements this past week have to make me name her the Player of the Month.
What’s next: Hopkins plays a ton of NE and ASouth regional foes the next few weeks.
Honorary Mention: Bryn Raschke, CMU
CENTRAL
Player: Ariana Iranpour
Team: Chicago
Results: 2-1 singles, 3-0 doubles at ITA Indoors
Recap: Outstanding performance at ITA indoors posting and undefeated doubles record and going 2-1 in singles. A dominant win over DePauw 6-0, 6-1 at #1 singles as well as a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the ITA small college champion Ashnaa Rao of Hopkins. At this point there has been only one player Wash U.) who has been able to take Ariana down, despite that she gets the POTM nod due to her unscathed doubles record during the month of February against division III opponents and 3-0 against the indoor national field to include Hopkins, Carnegie, and Rebecca Ho herself from Wash U.
What’s next: Chicago faces DePauw in a rematch from indoors before heading to California
Honorary Mention: Rebecca Ho – Wash U. of St. Louis
NE
Player: Ellie Mandzhukova
Team: Bates
Results: defeated Ward of CMS at #1, 7-6, 2-6, 14-12
Recap: Although Bates lost to CMS 1-8, Mandzhukova notched a big win against Ward in a tough 3 setter
What’s next: v MHC on 3/8
Honorary Mention: Carley Cooke, Brandeis
WEST
Player: Meagan Zamilpa
Team: Whittier College
Results: def. Monica Li (CalTech); Kelani Ericksen (Oxy) & Ellie Mandzhukova (Bates) & Doubles wins over CalTech & Oxy
Recap: Zamilpa came out strong this month with two solid wins over SCIAC opponents before defeating a game-player in Mandzhukova of Bates, just a day before the latter defeated Caroline Ward of CMS. Zamilpa then took a super-breaker victory over Musngi of UT-Tyler and a straight sets win over Harris of Mary Washington. On the Doubles court, she won with Gabi Etchegaray over Mary Washington and had a HUGE win over the Lawless twins of Whitman.
What’s next: Christopher Newport & Rochester (NY)
Honorary Mention: Sofia “La Reina” Vega (7-0 in D3 contest between both disciplines, just lacked a nationally ranked victory)
Alright! Those are the award winners for February. Be on the lookout for future posts from your resident bloggers and our “Interview with a Coach” later this month!
