3/18 Division III Power Rankings

And…….. here is another edition of our weekly Power Rankings! Not many changes this week as it looks like teams are officially beginning to settle in.  Maybe there will be some fireworks this week with Amherst’s Spring Break and a few interesting matches over the weekend.  We could definitely use a change-up.  See the Power Rankings below and I also included a few notables as well.

Notable Moves:

Carnegie Mellon, Up 2 Spots – The Tartans debut their highest ranking in our power rankings at #8.  Mostly due to the strength of their wins over Spring Break, the Tartans have a big match against #5 Hopkins this weekend as well as another match against #17 Mary Washington.  This is a talented team that we had been expecting a breakout from, given that we had them high in the rankings prior to their stellar week.

Whitman, down 3 spots to #14 – Whitman probably could have been a bit higher until they lost to Pomona in a heart-breaker yesterday.  Tough sledding for the Squirrels as they look to beat Whittier today to keep that solid top 15 ranking.  This is a team that needs all the wins it can get now that it’s knocked off the hard part of it’s schedule with not many good wins.

Bates & MIT, down infinity spots – This is what happens when you lose to someone and then that team loses to an unranked team.  MIT got crushed by Bates after getting swept in doubles, then Bates goes out and sh*ts the bed against Colby yesterday.  Both these teams are already having disappointing seasons and have been thus knocked out of the top 30.  I can’t believe teams this talented are getting knocked out, but this is the spirit of DIII Tennis!

Colby, enters the rankings – See above.  Colby got their nice “season-defining” win over Bates, but we are pretty unsure if is a good indication of their talent.  They are currently the first team out of the top 30 despite notching the Bates win.  We need to see more from the Colby squad to rank them with the best 30 teams in the nation.

That is all! Feel free to leave your comments.
