Regional Players of the Week #2

Atlantic South

Max Kaye (Swarthmore)

Max Kaye

Very few A South teams were in action last week, but that doesn’t diminish Kaye’s performance. He went 5-0 in singles for the Garnet against five different ranked opponents (CMS, P-P, Redlands, Kenyon, and Whittier). His win over CMS spurred a comeback for Swarthmore, as they pulled off the upset of the year against the then-#4-ranked Stags.

Central

C.J. Williams (Kenyon)

C.J. Williams

Williams’ play was superlative last week. He went 4-0 in doubles and 3-1 in singles against four ranked opponents for the Lords. Though Kenyon eventually lost, he and Razumovsky combined for a victory at #2 doubles against 9th ranked Cal Lutheran to avoid the doubles sweep, and his win at #3 singles over Andre Halabi from Santa Cruz helped clinch the Kenyon victory over the 10th ranked Slugs.

Northeast

Andrew Guzick (Vassar)

Andrew Guzick

None of the traditional Northeast powers were in action last week, as the NESCAC teams geared up for their respective Spring Break trips. That opened the door for Guzick to pick up the weekly award. Though Vassar couldn’t pick up any team victories, Guzick dealt Whittier #1, Julian Seneviratne, his first D3 loss of the season. He also defeated the #4 ranked player in the nation, Alex Lane, and teamed with Ben Guzick for a nice victory over Redlands’ #1 doubles team.

West

Chris Weichert (P-P) and Patrick Lipscomb (Redlands)

Lipscomb is still undefeated at #1 singles for the Bulldogs. Last week, he picked up huge victories over Northeast POW Andrew Guzick, #10-ranked Max Frey, Mary Washington’s Sam Wichlin, and Swarthmore #1 Zak Kelm. Though he and partner Mark Bloom fell twice in doubles, they still picked up nice victories over Swarthmore’s and Mary Washington’s #1 doubles teams.

Chris Weichert

Weichert had a phenomenal week for Pomona-Pitzer, despite his team suffering a couple tough losses to Cal Lu and Trinity (TX). He and partner Connor Sutton went 4-1 in doubles with victories over Cal Lu, Occidental, Trinity, and Swarthmore. He also went 5-0 at #2 singles last week, contributing to notable team wins over Mary Washington and Swarthmore.
