Blogger Perspective: Located in an idyllic Southern California setting, CMS may be the most well-rounded program in D3 tennis. CMS is made up of three of the five colleges located in Claremont, CA with the others being Pomona and Pitzer. Claremont McKenna College (the “C”) is the most well known of the three schools, offering a top notch liberal arts education that is ranked top 10 nationally. Harvey Mudd College (the “M”) is the top-ranked engineering college in the country with the highest starting salaries for graduates of any school in the country. Scripps College (the “S”) is a renowned all-female institution. After the opening of the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in 2009, CMS’ facilities became the envy of every team in D3. The Stags rarely leave the friendly confines of their 12-court facility in Claremont, and annually are co-hosts of the prestigious 8-team Stag-Hen Invitational, which is typically comprised of teams that are all ranked top 20 in the country.

After reaching the NCAA Final in 2013 and 2014, CMS finally broke through and won the national title that had eluded them for 30 years in 2015. Head Coach Paul Settles is one of the best in D3, both as a coach and person, and the Stag alumni stay extremely connected to the program. Their recruiting in California is strong, and they have recently begun to attract players from the East Coast, including an SEC transfer. On top of the academic rigors, you can expect to train many hours on the tennis court, and your game will most definitely improve between freshman and senior year. The Stags always have a very deep bench, and if you are outside of the Top 100 in your class, it’s likely you may have to wait a few years before cracking the lineup. For the determined 3-star, CMS is also a great place to go, as Settles has a track record for developing motivated 3-stars into all-Americans and even national champions.
