Central Season Preview: They Got Five On It

What if I told you, he wasn’t the greatest. That a region would fail to protect its greatest natural resource. That sometimes it is a matter of life and saying, “On It”. That no one can outrun the truth. What if I told you, he wasn’t the only Nike shoes reseller. That you can heal all wounds with regular scoring. That the Hornets no one could stop, tragically were. What if I told you, making Pool C was easy. What if I told you…

Whoops, that’s not the 30 for 30 we’re honoring with this article…no, no, no. This article all about the Central region’s Five Singles players will honor Jameis “Worst Pregame Speech” Winston and his inaugural 30 touchdown, 30 interception season. Similar to my article on the region’s Sixes, I will do a tl;dr run down of the ten Fives in ascending UTR order before diving into 30 negatives and positives facts for this group

Little Column A, Little Column B:

  1. Tennis runs in the Gutierrez family; Carlos’ older sister Laura plays for U Chicago.
  2. Carlos Gutierrez once served as a ball boy to Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, and Pete Sampras.
  3. Gutierrez is one of ten first years on the team, while I don’t count that as a negative for him (seeing as he has nine new best friends) I will count it as one for Coach Riggle who is entering his third decade of coaching at Depauw.
  4. Guilherme Calixto is from Sao Paulo, Brazil and is one of five foreigners (Brazil, Spain, and US all represented) on this Viking Squad.
  5. Calixto clinched Augustana’s 5-4 upset win over Coe last season.
  6. 2018-29 giveth and taketh from Calixto – his all-time season ended in a whimper with a deli trip.
  7. Unfortunately for Mr. Vidinas, I looked through his recruitment celebration article for his high school and they mentioned every athlete but him L
  1. Gabriel Vidinas is the highest ranked recruit in his class (possibly the highest since the scandal)
  2. Vidinas didn’t get a chance to show off this Fall with a 0-0 record
  3. The NCAC 2017-18 Honorable Mention from Oberlin, Zachary Vaughn only uses the French Open versions of the Babolat Aero Pro
  4. Vaughn is tied for the fourth most singles dual match wins in an Oberlin season at 14
  5. …Unfortunately that number flipped over to the L column in the following season
  6. Jacob Dennen is a Spanish, Political Science Double Major from MIchigan
  7. Dennen is also 0/X in all of his 10 pt. Tiebreakers I have found
  8. One of 8 players, Dennen is likely going to be called on in doubles and will aim to improve his 0-0 record
  9. Aney was one of the most reoccurring players on successful Indoors Draft Kings teams last winter
  10. Aney is also an ex (though if my beer league hockey friends are any indication this title is temporary at best) hockey player – which seems to run in the family seeing as older sister Jessie will play grad school hockey for UConn and older sister Katie plays at GAC (tennis too!)
  11. Older sister Jessie is the third winningest singles player in UNC history with a 127-37 record (a lowly 112-33 in dubs)
  12. Bryan Yoshino has been playing tennis since he was 8 years old, and for almost as long he’s been investing in the stock market since 14.
  13. Yoshino has successfully invited Mikael Torpegaard over for multiple “jam sessions”
  14. Yoshino is keeping the Ohio-One Handed BH torch alive and has a viable claim at the empty throne
  15. Takabatake works as a research assistant for the Center of Cardiovascular Research Development, analyzing various atherosclerotic effects of high protein diets in mouse models, assessing the amino acids involved in macrophage apoptosis induced by the mTORC1 signaling pathway.
  16. While Takabatake coaches over 50 students himself, he couldn’t coach himself past the 6-singles spot last season.
  17. Takabatake lost 7-6 in the third to Tommy Entwistle in Wash U’s 4-5 upset loss to GAC
  18. Aduru must find a new doubles partner. Unless.
  19. Born July 1st, this Cancer lost only five matches in his high school career… and only four singles matches his whole first year
  20. Aduru is following trailblazer, Fotjasek, on the Texas to Case pipeline…and must enjoy it enough that a second one is en route.
  21. True or not, I got this text after I picked Sachin Das in my ITA Preview, “Serves righty hits lefty, volleys righty, hits overheads with either hand” – if that’s true, automatically one of my favorite players
  22. Sachin Das is an econ major helping to replace the losses to the Maroon All-Econ roster
  23. Das could honestly find himself as high as 3 or never in the lineup again, it really is too tough to tell with Chicago.

Look for my article on the Region’s Fours to come out soon.
