Van Zee’s Vault Podcast: Southwestern Coach Billy Porter

Now that we have finally hit our stride with the technical issues, podcast’s should be coming out a bit more regularly. Today’s guest is Coach Billy Porter. This particular recording was done a couple weeks ago, but google voice issues made us delay the posting. We are trying out using SoundCloud for this podcast, but you can download the podcast by clicking on the button in the upper right. But other than that, it was great to talk with Coach Porter about the resurgence of Southwestern this year and his plans to challenge the rest of Texas. Good luck against Trinity tomorrow night! Hope you enjoy!

Be sure to check out my other Podcasts on the site. If you missed the blogger reveal podcast, you can find the link below. My next guest will be with Coach Frank Barnes of Wisconsin Whitewater and will be posted early next week.

Thanks for the nice comments Tree & West.

Looks like TU had a statement win last night. (watched a little on the TU video feed). Comments:
    – TU inserted a grizzled a vet Senior at #6 who came thru with a win over a pretty solid SW freshman. (The grizzled vet also played lights out dubs)
    – TU toughness prevailed at #1 & #4 singles (2 places I thought SW had a chance to flip) & also at #3 & #5 (which I figured they’d take).
    – SW #1 dubs was a net cord away (a return winner that veered over the net players elbow & racquet when it was 7-8, 30/30) …..from taking it into a Tie Break. Could have been interesting if SW came out of dubs up 2-1.
    – SW’s #2 continues to impress and the kid finds ways to beat really good players.

Nice interview with Coach Porter. The SW men (& women) will continue to rise up the D3 ranks with Porter at the helm.

    Other comments:

    – The plot thickens with Torchygate. As HS seniors who are future nuclear physicists dump MIT and future brain surgeons dump Hopkins (from their College short lists)…all because of the lure of the “Dirty Sanchez” & the “Trailer Park” tacos found at Torchy’s. 🙂

    – Loved how Coach was trying to be diplomatic on the topic of his Line 1 dubs. Not discounting the SoS of the 3 teams above his, while at the same time letting us know that his guys took out Midd & GAC (while teams ranked above his guys didn’t).

    – Tell D3 West that I thought that his “shootout on 6th street” article was a reference to 6th street being half way between TU & SW….(not some street in Claremont). 🙂 & Since there has been no comment on the match taking place in San Antonio tonite…I’ll offer a comment:

    – SW HAS to take two of the three dubs matches (which means they HAVE to take line one & probably line two dubs) to have a legit chance for the upset.
    – If they take 2 of 3 dubs matches they’ll either win or lose 5-4. If they come out of dubs down 2-1, it’ll likely be a 6-3 loss.
    – If they get swept in dubs, it’ll be a 7-2 or 8-1 loss.

But if they squeak out two out of three dubs matches, it could be a very interesting evening in San Antonio.

I just wanted to say I enjoy your enthusiasm and reading your comments as much as I do reading the bloggers actual posts. It’s nice to have some insight on TX tennis down on the front lines

Another great comment, as always. Look for a Trinity/SW preview in the Regional Roundup later today! I’m sure your insights will continue to be accurate.
