Blogger Perspective: The Southwestern tennis program has been completely transformed during the past few years and this is thanks to fourth-year Head Coach Billy Porter and his hardworking group of players. The Pirates used to be in the middle of D3, sometimes qualifying for their conference tournament and winning a few matches per season. That all changed when Porter stepped on campus and Southwestern is now headed for a likely finish inside the Top 35 in the country in 2017. Porter’s passion shows and his players have bought into his system. The Pirates have stepped up their recruiting in the past few seasons and the idyllic location in attractive Austin, TX certainly doesn’t hurt. The school has a lot of notoriety within the state of Texas, but Porter is working on expanding the brand which he knows will be a key to success in strengthening his tennis program.

Southwestern, the oldest school in the state, offers a small campus with one of the best liberal arts educations in Texas for students who want to join an on-the-rise program and build something. The Pirates are looking to emulate close-by rival Trinity TX and having Porter coupled with administrative support for athletics has Southwestern going in the right direction. They have recently begun to play some of the nation’s top programs and it is likely that this program will climb into the Top 20 tennis programs in the country within the next few years. Southwestern has seen a meteoric rise in their ranking and it is a good spot for a student-athlete that wants to work hard on court while getting a well-respected liberal arts education in Texas.
