Weird that Cruz’s Eric Koenig didn’t enter the singles draw, but teamed up with Parker Larsen only to lose in doubles’ first round.

Yeah, but it’s not like he has a singles ranking to protect. At #11 in the West, he had more to gain than just about anyone from making a run in singles. Hopefully, he doesn’t have an injury that’s limiting his mobility or something like that.

per http://slugtennisnation.blogspot.com/, Koenig evidently sustained some sort of injury in the second set of his match vs. Cal Lu. With that, my sense is that coach had Koenig / Larsen play doubles at Ojai to get them more on – court experience (Larsen has not regained last year’s form IMO)

Halabi vs. Lipsomb should be fun: they were high school teammates which makes for a bit of fun backstory

Cruz is looking good in this with Bettwy, Nerenbery, Halabi, and Stanley all showing up. Larsen got destroyed but Worley is a beast of a #3 player so no shame there

6 for CMS, 4 for Cruz, 4 Cal Lu, a Poet, and a Bulldog left.
“Surprise” survivors of the first day include Halabi, Bettwy, and Stanley from Cruz; and Cahill and Johnson from CMS.
    Doubles still going

Yes a few surprises. Seneviratne had a 3 set win to get into the round of 16. He has put together a pretty solid year and is on the “bubble” for a trip to the NCAA singles tournament.

Great couple rounds from Bettwy dropping 6 games in 2 matches. Speaking of good days Halabi drops only 4 games making it to the round of 16. Impressive performance beating PP’s #2 6-2, 6-2.

I thought Stanley could have a good tournament and he did just that taking out the #1 from Chapman and Allinson from PP.

Worley over Larsen 6-0 6-3 — he must be playing solid tennis as Larsen should be back into top form by now.

Upset of the day has to be Cahill over Meyer. Very tough first round match up for Meyer.

      My predictions for tomorrow:
Nerenberg defeats Erani in straight sets
In a battle of big forehands Seneviratne defeats Bettwy in 2 close sets
      Wood over Wilson
I’m going to call the upset with Halabi over Lipscomb in 3 sets
      Lane over Stanley
      Worley over Cahill
      Johnson over Millet
      Ballou over Marino

Ballou wins the singles and in an upset Erani/Lane take the doubles. As usual, some strange results at Ojai making the next two weeks of West Coast D 3 tennis quite interesting.

I always find Ojai fascinating to see which bottom guys can step up and make a name for themselves as well as which usually solid lineup guys have letdowns without playing for the team result

I would also add a couple more to this list:
Rodgers vs Bloom(Just like lower-CMS players Cruz has a history of doing the same in this tournament and lets not forget Rodgers was playing in their lineup last year)
Schommer vs Allinson (Just a pretty even matchup with potential to be a very good match)

I agree with D3tennis guy in saying that both Bernhardt and Dahl should get through those matches fairly comfortably although the Ojai has been known to produce far greater upsets in the past

    1. d3tennisguy

Yeah, turns out admin was pretty right about the Bernhardt/Reynolds match

  6. d3tennisguy

Those are most of the good match-ups. Bernhardt will probably beat Reynolds pretty handily, and Dahl should destroy Sousa, though. I’m also interested in:
Rosner vs. Hudson (Cruz’ breakout junior vs. P-P’s fantastic freshman)
Cahill vs. Hunt (Hunt has been good lately, but Cahill has been solid for years)
Kotrappa vs. Weichert (Classic lower-CMS player vs. seed, though Weichert should be able to win this one)
