which win was more impressive this weekend, hopkins over amherst or CMU over amherst? I might be inclined to say CMU. What a singles performance.
The singles performance from CMU was comprehensive, but Hopkins’ was more of a team victory, and it shows that they have addressed their doubles weakness from last year. They came within a point of sweeping the Jeffs in doubles. Amherst was also liable to be cashed against CMU after playing five three-setters against Hopkins. (Keep in mind that this is essentially the pre-season, so they’re probably not in top shape). It’s also important to note that both victories come with massive asterisks, as Amherst is missing both Fritz and Dale. Either way, the wins are huge steps forward for both programs. Hopkins couldn’t beat an even more short-manned Amherst team in the Fall last year, and CMU couldn’t have sniffed a victory against the team they beat today last year.
Why would Amherst schedule these teams in the fall? I’m curious why they would use dates up now when they don’t have anything to lose per se. Do they use this as prep for the spring?
In all honesty the weather is nicer in the fall. There should be more tennis in fall and less in February.
