Blogger Perspective: Bates is a NESCAC liberal arts school with a gorgeous outdoor tennis facility based in Lewiston, Maine. Although their results on the tennis court have trailed some of their NESCAC peers in recent years, Coach Paul Gastonguay runs an outstanding and serious program. Bates players often play deep into the NCAA Singles and Doubles tournaments. Coupled with their solid tennis program, Bates offers a top ranked liberal arts education that caters to some more “intellectual and free-spirited types” when compared to the preppy reputation of some NESCAC peers. The workload for students at Bates is nothing to scoff at, and Bobcat alumni often find their way to graduate schools as well as other charitable pursuits such as the peace corps.

Size-wise, Bates is a slightly smaller than a few of the other NESCAC schools. They are sometimes hurt due to lesser nationwide name recognition than some of their peer institutions, but are very popular throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The school is quite insular in Maine, but as is true with most NESCAC institutions, students who attend truly enjoy their time in school. The tennis team is always a threat to pull off a big win. While they have not historically drawn the big time recruits that some other top D3 schools get, they have had decent success recruiting internationally. Committed recruits are known to improve under Gastonguay, and that process begins the minute they step foot in Lewiston. The Wallach Tennis Center at Bates is a big selling point for prospective student-athletes and has hosted the NCAA Finals numerous times in the past.
